DR. GHANIM JASIM SAMARRAI, A CRITICAL READING OF THE BROWNINGESQUE LEGACY IN MODERN AMERICAN POETRY, Book Review _1_112

Preface

Themes and techniques in literature travel across borders and across centuries, not only from the 'core' to the 'periphery' but vise versa and amongst the 'centers' of the cores as well. The Orient has charmed and impacted many English writers such as William Shakespeare, Percy Bysshe Shelley, George Gordon Byron, and T. S. Eliot. From Rome England 'imported' the Sonnet and from Paris Imagism. Likewise, Robert Browning's dramatic monologue travelled from England to North America and resided there as a savior from worn-out poetic traditions that crippled delivery of new innovations for years. If the end of the nineteenth century brought with it new horizons for American arts and literature to blossom, the beginning of the twentieth century was especially characterized by bold experiments in poetic form and style that led to what is now known, among a large number of critics, as Modernism in American poetry.
In the main, it has been observed that leaders of this revolutionary change adopted Browning's technique that helped them make their creative contribution to twentieth-century poetry. The dramatic monologue, many critics believe, was the suitable vehicle the American poets needed to carry out their modernizing task.
This book aims at closely studying the impact of Robert Browning on modern American poetry. It examines how his dramatic monologue was employed by several leading American poets; among them are Ezra Pound, and Thomas Stearns Eliot. It also aims to examine the extent and nature of these poets' variations on the Browningesque model.
